Where do the exchange rates come from?
Rates are fetched from the Open Exchange Rates / exchangerate-api.com free tier, which sources data from financial markets and updates daily. For most everyday conversions — travel money, international transfers, rough cost estimates — daily rates are perfectly adequate. For live trading, use a dedicated financial terminal with tick-level data.
How often are the rates updated?
The free API tier updates rates once per day. Foreign exchange markets are open 24/5 (closed weekends), so rates fluctuate continuously during market hours. The rate you see here will be within 24 hours of the current mid-market rate — suitable for planning and estimation purposes.
What is the mid-market rate?
The mid-market rate (also called the interbank rate) is the midpoint between the buy and sell prices of two currencies on the global market. It's the "real" exchange rate without any markup. Banks, travel agencies, and money changers all add a spread or fee on top of this rate — sometimes 2–5% or more. Services like Wise (TransferWise) advertise using the mid-market rate, which is one reason they're often cheaper than banks for international transfers.
What is the best way to convert currency when traveling?
Generally: (1) Use a no-foreign-transaction-fee credit card for purchases — most major card networks apply rates close to the mid-market rate. (2) If you need cash, withdraw from a local ATM in the destination country rather than exchanging at airports, which have terrible rates. (3) Avoid dynamic currency conversion (DCC) — always pay in the local currency when given the choice. (4) For larger amounts, services like Wise or Revolut typically offer the best rates for bank-to-bank transfers.
Why does USD to EUR differ from EUR to USD?
They're reciprocals of each other. If 1 USD = 0.92 EUR, then 1 EUR = 1/0.92 = 1.087 USD. The rates aren't "different" in the sense of being inconsistent — they're just two ways of expressing the same relationship. In practice, you'll see slightly different buy/sell prices at banks and exchanges due to their spread markup, but the mid-market rates are always reciprocals.
How many currencies does this converter support?
This converter supports 160+ currencies including all major world currencies (USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, CHF, CAD, AUD, CNY, etc.), emerging market currencies, and many smaller national currencies. Cryptocurrencies are not included — for crypto conversion, use a dedicated exchange.
